Makeup Basics For The Professional Woman

As a business woman, you want to show up to work every day with your best face forward! Make-up helps to accentuate your features and apply coverage to imperfections when needed. Your appearance speaks before you do in so many situations. It should say what you want it to, especially in a professional environment. Cosmetics can easily pull together a look and add not only confidence but a sense of sophistication and elegance.
Why Good Make-up Is Challenging
Whether you are a teacher, pilot, lawyer, engineer, blogger, or fitness trainer you may struggle to establish makeup basics that support your features. There are so many different types of make-up and too many options often overwhelm people.
In today’s world of bronzer, highlighter, and contouring there are many ways women go wrong. Instead of improving their look a woman may use contouring to create dark lines on her forehead which makes her look older and not put together at all. Failing to properly blend makeup has always been an issue for women.
Work is difficult enough, your makeup routine shouldn't be. With proper technique you can walk out the door with an effortless confident look.
Makeup Basics for A Professional Woman
You want to avoid heavy application of makeup because applying too much makeup can look “cakey." The less makeup you have to apply the better. Not only does it save you time and money but it improves your appearance with not much effort. Below is a simple routine that help get you started:
Primer
This concept is often overlooked. Even when applying light makeup you need to prepare the skin's surface. This will make sure your makeup lasts the whole work day. After washing and moisturizing your face in the morning apply a good primer to set your skin.
Foundation
Applying a subtle fountain or tinted moisturizer will give you light coverage for the day. It is important to blend your product into your neck down into your chest. Don’t forget to blend it into your ears as well.
Contouring & Highlighter
Again, you want to keep contouring light. Contour with a shade that is only a shade or two darker than your natural skin tone. You apply the darker shade to your hair-line, side of your nose, under your cheekbones, and under your jaw line. With a blending sponge or brush be sure to blend the shadow in well. Finish your face make-up off with a gentle highlight on the ridge of your nose, top of your lip, and tops of your cheeks below the outside corner of your eyes. Blend with a soft brush if needed.
Eyes
A professional eye look will include a natural eyeliner applique. Consider simply outlining your top lid only. Apply mascara on the top lashes only as well. This will promote a natural professional look. Use a neutral shade and do your best to avoid shimmer and glitter shadows. Going light on the brows is also important to not offset the whole look. Less is more and fill in with your brow with pencil.
Blush
If you want to apply blush at all you may consider a very light touch of blush to the sides of your cheeks. Your contouring should have created enough of a look that you do not need to apply heavy blush.
Lips
Going with a bright color may compliment your light look and also communicate confidence. The only drawback is the possibility of getting lipstick on your teeth, lipstick bleeding onto your face, or having the time to reapply throughout the day. If you can avoid these situations then by all means, go with a confident building color. If you don’t have time for this then going with a subtle lip tint and gloss will complete your look nicely.
You work hard and your look should showcase the effort you pour into yourself and your work.
